Irish soda bread

Spread the love

Ingredients for 10 servings:

  • 225 g flour (wheat flour)
  • 225 g flour (whole wheat flour)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder (cream of tartar)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 350 ml buttermilk

Instructions

Working time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 1 hour

Preheat the oven to 190°C and line a baking sheet with baking paper. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and add the baking soda and cream of tartar. Crumble the butter into the mixture and then stir in the sugar. Add the buttermilk and mix until a soft dough forms. Don’t overmix, or the bread will become tough. Form a round loaf and place it on the baking paper. Cut a deep cross into the surface of the loaf. Dust the bread with flour and bake for 35-45 minutes (place a bowl of water on the floor of the oven). The bread is ready when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Serve warm from the oven.
