Is Apple Juice Healthy? Here’s What You Should Know About the Drink

Healthy apple juice? – these variants exist

Apple juice is not low in calories. Even if you reach for the pure apple juice, the drink still has around 500 calories per liter, since apples have a fairly high fruit-specific sugar content.

  • Apple juice is not just apple juice. Therefore, when buying, you should look very carefully at what is on the label.
  • An apple fruit juice drink only has to contain 30 percent apple juice. The proportion of apple juice in apple nectar must be at least 50 percent. Both drinks usually have a lot of added sugar.
  • Only pure apple juice consists of 100 percent and therefore has the most nutrients. Sugar is usually no longer added to pure apple juice.
  • You can also get apple spritzer in the supermarket – a mixed drink made from apple juice and mineral water. Apple spritzer also only has to contain 30 percent apple juice. In the industrially produced apple spritzer you will usually find a lot of sugar and sometimes also flavorings and preservatives.
  • Tip: apple spritzer has significantly fewer calories than pure apple juice if you make it yourself. The homemade drink is also refreshing and healthy.

Apple juice – the drink is so healthy

It is always healthiest to eat the fruit straight off the tree. So you can be absolutely sure that the body is getting all the healthy nutrients.

  • With each processing, fruits and vegetables lose nutrients. Vitamin C, for example, is particularly sensitive. Of course, this also applies to the apple juice. When it comes to fruit juices, the general rule is that the less fruit there is in the drink, the less healthy the juices tend to be. If you have a lot of apple trees in the garden, it is worth making your own apple juice. It’s not that difficult and you then know exactly what’s in the juice.
  • If you have the choice between pure and naturally cloudy apple juice, you should go for the naturally cloudy juice. Due to the different processing, there are significantly more valuable antioxidants in the naturally cloudy apple juice. Depending on the apple variety, however, the proportion varies considerably.
  • Scientists from the University of Kaiserslautern have found in animal experiments that the free radicals in the large intestine of the animals were rendered harmless by the polyphenols in the naturally cloudy apple juice. Based on their study results, the researchers suspect that naturally cloudy apple juice has a similarly positive effect on the human large intestine.
  • The polyphenols also prevent heart disease and cancer. The decisive factor, however, is the proportion of antioxidants in the apple juice.
  • Because of the calorie content, you shouldn’t drink too much apple juice a day, especially since it’s not too good for your teeth either.
