Potatoes and losing weight seem to be a contradiction in terms – but still, it can work with sweet potatoes. Of course, she doesn’t work miracles either. Dieting takes a lot of commitment and self-control, but sweet potato can help you lose weight successfully.
Losing weight with sweet potatoes – that’s why it can work
The sweet potato, also known as the sweet potato, is not one of the lowest-calorie vegetables. With around 90 calories per 100 grams, the sweet potato is somewhere in the middle. But as we all know, calories aren’t necessarily the primary factor in a successful diet. Even more important than the raw calories is how filling a food is. And that’s where the sweet potato can really score:
- Sweet potatoes have a very high caiapo content. The secondary plant substance ensures that the sugar gets quickly from the blood into the cells. As a result, the pancreas has to produce significantly fewer messenger substances. This in turn not only relieves the pancreas, but also the blood sugar level does not rise as much.
- Blood sugar levels play a crucial role in weight loss. If it is too low, we constantly feel the urge to eat something. It is not uncommon for us to spontaneously reach for some sugar-heavy sweets that quickly raise blood sugar, where it then drops just as quickly.
- In short: the sweet potato brings something that is of crucial importance for the success of a diet: the vegetable ensures that the blood sugar level moves at a constant level. Spontaneous feelings of hunger don’t even arise, our nerves are much less stressed and we are relaxed.
- In addition to the caiapo, the batata has a high potassium content. Potassium is known to have a dehydrating effect on the body. And last but not least, the sweet potato contains a lot of fiber, which is known to ensure regular digestion. Another not insignificant factor for the success of a diet.
Support with a diet
A few years ago, Japanese scientists discovered that the insulin produced by the pancreas after eating sweet potatoes is well utilized by the body. The researchers assume that the caiapo in the sweet potato is primarily responsible for this. For this reason, the vegetable is not only interesting for figure-conscious people, but also for diabetics.
- The caiapo is mainly in or directly under the skin of the sweet potato. So that the valuable plant substances are not lost, you should eat the batata with the skin if possible.
- In contrast to the “conventional potato”, the sweet potato can also be eaten raw. This makes the Batata not just an uncomplicated snack. In the raw state, none of the valuable nutrients are lost.
- With a small cucumber or tomato salad and a delicious, hearty quark, the raw sweet potato becomes a super snack or a healthy lunch in no time at all.
- But of course you can also cook, cook or bake the sweet potatoes – in this respect the red tuber is no different from our potatoes.
Sweet Potato versus Potato – This is what differentiates the vegetable
The two still have the term potato in common. Both are originally from South America. Otherwise, the batata and the potatoes have relatively little in common. From a botanical point of view, the plants are not related to each other. While the sweet potato belongs to the morning glory family, the potato belongs to the nightshade family.
- The differences are already visible on the outside: the normal potato varieties are more or less round and brownish. The elongated sweet potato is not only significantly larger and heavier, it also stands out clearly from the potatoes with its bright red color.
- You can also tell from the color of the sweet potato that the vegetable is particularly rich in carotenoids. And in fact, the sweet potato is one of the foods with the highest proportion of beta-carotene. Carotenoids are important for the formation of vitamin A, which, among other things, ensures healthy and beautiful skin.
- In addition, the sweet potato provides important nutrients such as vitamins C, B2 and B6 as well as E, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, potassium, biotin, protein and plenty of secondary plant substances.
- In addition to their other nutrients, the potatoes score particularly well with their high proportion of folic acid. Among other things, folic acid is involved in cell division and blood formation. Folic acid is particularly important during pregnancy.
- A very important difference concerns the type of preparation: In contrast to the sweet potato, the “normal” potato must not be eaten raw. Although you should not overdo it with the sweet potato either, as the vegetable contains some oxalic acid.
