Healthy donuts – Here’s how

First things first: Baking donuts are always healthier than deep-frying them. Of course, fat is a flavor carrier and the donuts taste good. But investing in a donut pan is definitely a good idea.

  • It’s not generally about making donuts with fewer calories. Healthier alternatives don’t necessarily have to be lower in calories. An example of this is nuts as a substitute for chips: Although these have healthy fats, they are packed with calories. And yet nuts are a healthier snack than chips.
  • To make your donuts healthier, we recommend replacing the white sugar with another sweetener. Honey, raw cane sugar, maple syrup, or stevia are suitable for this.
  • You can easily replace white flour with wholemeal flour. If you want to make your donuts a little low-carb, use coconut flour or chickpea flour instead. In another article, we have presented other ways in which you can replace flour.
  • Avoid low-fat products as much as possible, as they contain more sugar but are not healthier overall.

  • We divide the ingredients into dry and wet ingredients.
  • The dry ingredients include 240g flour, 100g sugar (or alternative), 2 teaspoons baking powder, some nutmeg, a little cinnamon, and a small pinch of salt.
  • The salt in the dough is perfectly normal. A small pinch of salt belongs in every sweet pastry or dessert, as this increases the sweetness.
  • The wet ingredients are 170ml buttermilk, 2 tablespoons canola oil, and 2 eggs (or one of our alternatives).

How to bake healthy donuts

  • First, preheat the oven to 220°C.
  • Mix all dry ingredients together.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the eggs with the oil and buttermilk. This is where you would also add the honey or maple syrup if that is your alternative to sugar.
  • Now you should put everything in a bowl and mix well. The dough is perfect when the last white spot of flour has just disappeared.
  • Now put the dough in a plastic bag and cut off the tip. Alternatively, you can of course also use a real piping bag.
  • Then pour the batter into a greased oven dish, filling the cavity to about half or a little more.
  • Now put the donuts in the oven for a maximum of 10 minutes. You should keep checking how brown the donuts are from above.
  • When the donuts are still warm, roll them in a cinnamon-sugar mixture. Then you should let the donuts cool down completely.
