Make Your Own Muesli Bars – That’s How It Works

Ingredients for homemade granola bars

There are a few ingredients that every homemade granola bar needs:

  • Granola bars definitely need some form of grain or nut. These form the basis of the bar and provide the well-known “crunch” that makes a good muesli bar.
  • In addition to the base of grain or nuts, oil is also important. We use some sunflower oil in our recipe because it has a neutral taste. The oil is responsible for ensuring that everything connects well.
  • Also, consider adding a sweet source to your granola bar. This can be honey or raw cane sugar, for example. In order to make the granola bar as healthy as possible, you should avoid refined and white sugar. Stevia, maple syrup, and agave syrup have also proven their worth.
  • In addition to the ingredients, you also need an oven, a baking tray, and some baking paper. You should also have a bowl and a mixing spoon ready.

Make muesli bars yourself – the recipe

Our basic recipe consists of hazelnuts, oat flakes, and cocoa:

  • For this recipe you need 200g rolled oats, some sunflower oil, 2 tablespoons of honey (more/less if you like), 30g hazelnuts, and 10g cocoa nibs.
  • The amount of sunflower oil depends on how well you mix everything. We recommend starting with about 2 tablespoons and then carefully adding a little more oil until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Only add enough oil so that the mass is quite firm but can still be spread easily.
  • Preheat the oven to around 180°C top and bottom heat.
  • Next, prepare the baking sheet. Simply line this with parchment paper.
  • Now mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl and then pour everything onto the baking sheet. Then spread the porridge on the baking tray to form a smooth dough.
  • Bake the muesli bars for 15-20 minutes and check from time to time how far the bars are. Once the dough has finished baking, you can use a knife to cut the still warm bars to the desired size.
  • You can modify this recipe as you like. For example, instead of the nuts and cocoa nibs, you could just add some apple and cinnamon. Or you can make coconut granola bars with grated coconut and some fresh lemon juice.
