If your lettuce has become a little wilted, there are a few tricks you can use to make it crunchy again. Sugar water is a popular household remedy to get lettuce leaves fresh again.
Household tip: How to make your salad crisp again
A fresh salad is not only delicious but also healthy. If the leaves of the head of lettuce are already looking a bit wilted, you can get them crisp again with a few simple tricks.
- If you have a lamb’s lettuce that no longer looks fresh, simply soak the leaves in warm water for 30 minutes. Then rinse the lettuce with cold water.
- A sugar solution will help with an iceberg or lettuce. Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar with 1 liter of cold water in a large bowl. Put the lettuce leaves in for about 20 minutes.
- The trick works because the plant cells inside the lettuce leaf contain water and also allow water to pass through their membrane, but no sugar.
- In this way, the water flows from the bowl into the lettuce to compensate for the different concentrations and the leaf appears plump again.
- To prevent your lettuce from wilting in the first place, it is best to wrap it in a damp cloth and store it in the fridge. That way you can benefit from it for as long as possible.
