There is no general answer as to whether mineral water or tap water is healthier. Both types of water are subject to strict controls in Germany and are therefore of good quality. Which water is recommended in the individual case depends on various factors.
In particular, those who have an increased need for minerals or should avoid certain foods can make the best choice for themselves with a special mineral water. For example, vegans benefit from mineral water containing calcium. Since they don’t consume calcium-rich dairy products, they have to absorb the important mineral in other ways. Mineral water with a calcium content of at least 150 milligrams per liter of liquid is considered to contain calcium. But even those who are only allowed to consume certain minerals in moderation can benefit from a special mineral water. For example, people with kidney disease or high blood pressure should eat a low-sodium diet. A mineral water with a sodium content of less than 20 milligrams of sodium per liter is therefore recommended as part of a low-sodium diet.
In Germany, tap water is a good alternative to mineral water, because it also contains a large number of minerals. How high the concentration of these minerals is depends on several factors – such as the soil conditions – and therefore varies from region to region. Because tap water, in contrast to mineral water, is available everywhere and therefore does not have to travel long distances, it has less of an impact on the environment and is also very inexpensive.
Tap water is one of the most strictly controlled foods in Germany and can usually be drunk without hesitation in Germany. Only in old buildings that were built before 1973 and in which copper or lead pipes were installed can the water quality be impaired. Because the smallest pieces of lead and copper can come loose, the tap water there may have an increased copper or lead content. For children in particular, an increased concentration of metals in drinking water can be dangerous and lead to organ damage.
Even if both mineral water and tap water are rich in minerals – the amounts contained are usually not sufficient to cover the corresponding daily requirement. However, both types of water can be a good complement to other mineral-rich foods.
