Beat the sugar and eggs with the vanilla until frothy. Slowly stir in the sifted flour, salt, baking powder, and milk, one at a time. Then let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Wash the cherries, remove the stems, and pit them. Grease a soufflé dish (approx. 28 cm diameter) with butter. Pour in 1/3 of the batter and arrange the cherries on top. Carefully pour the remaining batter over the batter and smooth the surface. Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 180°C for about 40 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and dust with powdered sugar. Delicious hot or cold! As a dessert, the casserole serves 6-8 people. Apricots and peaches are also delicious in this casserole.
