Here’s the quickest way to avoid starvation if you only have a few minutes: Boil water in a kettle, pour it over the chow mein noodles (or more than the stated amount, depending on your appetite), and let it swell for about 4 minutes (or according to the package instructions). Drain, add to a plate, and mix with the pesto. Add oil and seasonings, if desired. The best alternative to dubious convenience foods! Chow mein noodles and pesto keep forever, so it’s worth keeping both on hand. You can buy ready-made pesto or make your own, even in various varieties. And in an absolute emergency (no pesto available!), olive oil/butter and seasonings will do the trick.
