Physalis: How is This Berry Useful and Can it Be Poisoned

Physalis is known among connoisseurs and connoisseurs under the somewhat disingenuous name “golden berries”. In general, it is a “native” of a far continent, the antithesis of North America – South America. But, gradually, the descendants of the conquistadors spread it around the world. But, due to purely climatic reasons, physalis is still not grown on an industrial scale on the fertile Ukrainian lands. That is why we have it mostly imported.

How to eat physalis properly

These berries can be eaten both processed and raw. If you choose the first option, then you should not forget to pour boiling water over them or subject them to a steam bath in order to remove the sticky coating. But nutritionists, on the contrary, recommend stopping at the second option. The fact is that when processed by heat, physalis loses most of the useful elements it contains. Furthermore, culinary experts recommend adding physalis berries (due to their low-calorie content) to vinaigrettes, salads, and all kinds of different cold appetizers. In addition, it can be put in compotes and jelly. Plus, there are varieties that are dried in the sun or in the oven to produce almost one hundred percent raisins.

How much physalis can you eat per day?

Physalis should be treated as a delicacy. That is, you can occasionally add it to your diet, but you should not make it a regular food item. It is quite normal for the body to consume no more than one hundred grams of physalis per day. You can throw these berries into a salad, make a sauce, or make a vitamin broth. But for medicinal purposes, physalis can be consumed only on the recommendation of a doctor (and no more than seven to ten days).

Why physalis is useful for women

First of all, physalis is an extremely low-calorie berry. It contains only 55 kilocalories in 100 grams. For this reason, it is recommended for ladies trying to lose weight. For the “weaker” sex. After all, these berries have good anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. That is, doctors say, in some cases, physalis can very effectively cope with urolithiasis, cystitis, and other inflammatory processes in the female genitourinary system.

Physalis is good for men

The plant is valued for its special effect on the male genitourinary sphere. That is, these berries have beneficial anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties that have an excellent preventive effect on men’s health. The advantage of the plant is that it has virtually no contraindications and can be eaten frequently.

Is it possible to poison yourself with physalis?

As a typical representative of the nightshades, physalis contains many substances that sometimes cause negative reactions in the body in concentrated form. Physalis poisoning is likely only in the case of improper use of such a fruit – it should not be consumed unripe. The more ripe the physalis is, the less bitter it is and the more suitable the berries are for eating
