Ingredients for 3 servings:

  • 6 fish fillets (salted herring fillets or matjes, halves)
  • 3 onions
  • 2 apples
  • 3 gherkins
  • ½ cup whipped cream
  • 1 cup of yogurt
  • 100 ml milk
  • pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest time approx. 5 hours; Total time approx. 5 hours 30 minutes

Creamed herring

Soak the herring fillets in water for at least 4 hours, changing the water frequently. Peel the onions, slice them into thin rings, and place them in a covered bowl. Peel the apples, quarter them, and slice them into fine pieces, then add them to the bowl with the onions. Finely slice or grate the gherkins and add them to the bowl. Add the cream, yogurt, and milk, grind the pepper over the top, and stir thoroughly. Add the herring fillets to the sauce and stir gently. Place the bay leaf on top and let stand for a few hours. Serve with boiled potatoes.
