Ingredients for 1 servings:

  • Salted herring(s), ready to cook (a 5 liter bucket full)
  • 500 g white rock sugar
  • 3 liters of water
  • 1 bag(s) spice mix (herring spice)
  • 125 ml vinegar essence
  • 4 large onions, sliced

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest period approx. 5 days; Total time approx. 5 days 30 minutes

Wash the herring, clean them thoroughly inside and out, and soak them twice for 12 hours (in fresh water). Slowly dissolve the rock candy in one liter of water, then add the remaining water, herring seasoning, and vinegar essence. Let cool. Slice the onions and layer them alternately with the herring in a large pot. Pour the seasoned water over them and let them steep for at least 5 days.
