Potato Gratin: Recipe of The Kitchen Classic

You need these ingredients for the potato gratin

You only need a few ingredients for a potato gratin. You usually have these ready at home. The most important ingredient is of course the potato.

  • 800 g potatoes: choose the type that you like best. Firm or floury potatoes can be used. You can either boil potatoes beforehand or use them uncooked.
  • 200 grams of whipped cream
  • salt and pepper
  • A casserole dish and butter for brushing the dish

Here’s how to do it

In order for the potatoes to cook well in the oven, the potato slices should be about the same thickness.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. In a convection oven, around 180 degrees is sufficient.
  2. Peel the potatoes and cut them into even slices. You can also use a mandolin for this.
  3. Now the casserole dish needs to be greased with butter. Be sure to coat all sides evenly so the potato slices don’t stick.
  4. Lay the potato slices in the casserole dish. The individual slices should overlap.
  5. Once the potatoes are in the casserole dish, the whole thing can be poured over with cream. To do this, first put the cream in a bowl or mug. Season the cream with salt and pepper before adding it to the potatoes.
  6. If you want a thicker sauce, you can boil the cream with a little flour beforehand. There are usually no limits to the spices. Nutmeg, for example, goes well with potatoes. If you like, you can sprinkle the gratin with cheese. Anything that tastes good is allowed.
  7. Place the gratin in the oven. After about 45 minutes the potatoes should be done. However, the cooking time differs from oven to oven. Therefore, always check the potatoes with a wooden stick. When the potatoes are soft, the gratin is ready.
