pickled salted herring – super delicious

Mix the wine, vinegar, sugar, and spices and bring to a boil. Add the onions, bring to a boil briefly, and let cool. Debone and skin the salted herring, and cut into pieces (about two finger-widths). Now, in a tall 1-liter jar, alternate the onions, removed from the brine with a slotted spoon, and the herring pieces. Pour the brine over the herring, covering it. Cover and let stand in the refrigerator for about 2 days.
