Roast Sesame Properly – That’s How it Works

Roast sesame properly – that’s how it works

Roasting sesame is not particularly difficult and can be done in just a few minutes:

  1. First, wash the number of sesame seeds that you want to toast afterward. If you only want to roast sesame for one or two people, we recommend a maximum of two coffee cups of sesame. After you have washed the sesame, place it on a cloth or fine-mesh colander so that it can drain easily.
  2. Now prepare a bowl for the toasted sesame seeds.
  3. Turn your stove to medium-high and place a saucepan on the surface. Then put the previously washed sesame seeds in the pot. This should still be slightly damp, so it must not be completely dried.
  4. Now roast the sesame in the pot. It is important that the sesame is constantly stirred. You can use a spatula for this, for example. You toast the sesame seeds until you hear the grains crackle. From this point on, it is important that you repeatedly take a grain and rub it between your fingers. The sesame is only ready when it is easy and your fingers stay dry.
  5. Once you are satisfied that your sesame is toasted properly, remove the pot from the heat and pour the contents into the bowl provided. Sesame is particularly sensitive, so even a minimally long roasting time leads to a bad taste. It is therefore particularly important to find the right time. It may take several attempts to find the right roasting point.
  6. After toasting the sesame, you can store it. You should choose dry and airtight packaging for this. In addition, the storage location should be dark. Under these conditions, your roasted sesame can be stored for several weeks or a few months.
