Rusks: This is what you need to know about shelf life
It can sometimes take some time before a pack of rusks is empty. The good news is that if stored correctly, rusks will keep for a very long time:
- You will find an expiration date on a sealed pack. This is usually around a year. However, if you leave the pack sealed, the rusks will keep much longer and can still be eaten two years later.
- Once opened, most manufacturers recommend using the rusk within 4 weeks. But even after this time, the food is still edible. However, it can happen that it loses some of its crispiness.
- The general rule is: to rely on your senses. As long as the rusk doesn’t look or smell strange, you can usually eat it. Even if the package has been opened, the rusks can usually still be eaten without hesitation after a year if stored correctly.
This is the best way to store the rusks
When storing, you should note that the rusk must not become damp. Otherwise, mold may form after a while. Therefore, note the following points:
- You can leave the rusks in their packaging and put them in your cupboard, as long as the humidity is not too high. Make sure to close the pack as well as possible.
- If necessary, seal the packaging, for example with a rubber band or a sealing clip. In this way, the food stays fresher for longer.
- Alternatively, you can transfer the rusk into a plastic jar after opening. To prevent the absorption of harmful substances, it should be BPA-free. This is especially important if your children also eat the rusk.
