Shelf Life of Chocolate – That’s How Long it Stays Edible

Proper storage extends the shelf life of chocolate

Chocolate can still be eaten after the best-before date has passed if you store it properly.

  • The optimal storage temperature is between 12 and 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Store the chocolate in a dark place.
  • White chocolate is particularly sensitive and also absorbs odors. Therefore, this variety should always be stored in an airtight container.
  • Good to know: If your chocolate turns white, this is a sign that it has been stored incorrectly. If the temperature is too high, the fat in the cocoa butter crystallizes on the surface and shows up as a white coating. Fat bloom is not harmful – you can still eat the chocolate.

Shelf life of different types of chocolate

  • Depending on the cocoa content, the chocolate types have different shelf lives.
  • Half or dark chocolate has a shelf life of at least 2 years.
  • For milk chocolate, the time is reduced to 1.5 years.
  • You can use white chocolate for up to 1 year.
  • Incidentally, consumption after these periods is not a problem if stored properly. However, you have to reckon with a loss of quality in terms of taste with particularly old chocolate.
