More than mere hygiene for skin and hair: showering is wellness for everyday life. But is going under the shower every day healthy? And how long and how hot should the shower be? We clarify the most important questions about the cleaning ritual and reveal practical shower tips!
How often should you shower?
Some shower daily, others a few times a week: in fact, the frequency recommended by dermatologists varies. Because: Like your skin care, it depends entirely on your skin type. So nothing speaks against showering off healthy skin every day. However, if you suffer from dry skin, the beauty ritual is only recommended every second day.
The reason: every shower attacks the acid mantle of the skin. This barrier of oil and water protects tissues from moisture loss and the penetration of pollutants – and is already weak and porous in dry skin.
Daily showering could therefore trigger itching and feelings of tension here, as it further robs the dry tissue of moisture.
Tip: Never forget to apply lotion under the shower after a walk. Both healthy and dry skin is happy when its lipid layer is rebuilt after the beauty ritual with nourishing lotion or body milk.
How long showers do you recommend?
Dermatologists answer this question with this shower tip: As long as necessary, as short as possible. The reason: Every second under the shower strains the protective acid layer and dries out the tissue. As beautiful as the beauty ritual is: As a rule, limit it to a compact period of time. Three to five minutes is ideal.
Tip: It is advisable to care for the skin not only after but also during washing. Ideally, you should not use simple soap or a practical shower gel and shampoo combination, but rather moisturizing cleaning products such as shower oils or a shower balm.
What temperature is optimal?
The shower tip applies here: the cooler, the better. The reason: the warmer water gets, the stronger its washing power. High temperatures, therefore, put more strain on the protective acid mantle than low ones. Dermatologists, therefore, recommend not to permanently exceed a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. Ideally, you should take a lukewarm or even cold shower from time to time.
