Ingredients for 2 servings:
- 500 g minced meat
- 1 onion(s)
- 150 g mushrooms
- 100 g peas, frozen
- 1 carrot(s)
- 1 garlic clove(s)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 dl beef bouillon
- 1 tbsp cornstarch or flour
- 1 roll of pastry (depending on the size of the pie dish)
- 1 egg yolk
- salt and pepper
- nutmeg
- Paprika powder
- Cayenne pepper
- rosemary
- 2 bay leaves, if desired
Instructions
Working time approx. 20 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 25 minutes; Total time approx. 45 minutes
For the filling, brown the minced meat and then set aside. Meanwhile, chop the onions and mushrooms, and finely chop the carrots and garlic in a food processor. Brown the vegetables, then add the meat and garlic. Sprinkle with paprika and add the tomato paste, fry briefly, and deglaze with beef stock. To thicken the sauce, dissolve the cornstarch in a little water in a small container and add to the filling. Season with Worcestershire sauce and spices. Simmer until almost no liquid remains. Remove the bay leaves. In the meantime, grease a pie/gratin dish (approximately 18-20 cm in diameter). Cut out a lid (it should be about 1 cm wider than the dish). Line the pie/gratin dish with the remaining puff pastry, making sure the pastry extends just over the edge. Then pour the filling into the resulting puff pastry shell. Place the pastry lid on top of the filling and press the edges together. Then use a fork to make grooves in the edge and carefully pierce several holes in the pastry lid in a decorative pattern to allow steam to escape during baking. Brush the meat pie with egg yolk and place in a preheated oven at 200°C for around 25 minutes. You can of course add other ingredients to the meat pie, such as leeks, zucchini, eggplant, corn, kidney beans or peppers. You could also use cake batter instead of puff pastry. The filling for the meat pie can easily be prepared a day in advance. Since this recipe uses ready-made batter, preparation is quick and easy. If you don’t have a large pie or gratin dish, you can instead make several small and handy mini pies in a muffin tin and serve them as finger food.
