Smoked salmon is one of the foods that does not have a best-before date but a use-by date.
The latter is prescribed for sensitive food that perishes particularly quickly, such as smoked salmon, but also minced meat, fresh poultry or pre-packaged, washed lettuce leaves.
After the use-by date, these foods can pose a health risk due to germs. Therefore, they should no longer be eaten. In order to reduce food waste, it makes sense to keep an eye on the use-by date of these foods and eat them in good time.
The best-before date (MHD) is different. The MHD only states until when the manufacturer guarantees the highest quality of the food. If the originally closed packaging was stored correctly, the product can in most cases still be enjoyed even after the “best before date” has expired.
