Snow Peas – Crunchy Treats

Sugar snap peas belong to the legume family and are also called snow peas or snow peas. Depending on the variety, the snow pea plant grows up to two meters high. The pods are harvested very early, so their shell, unlike that of other peas, is edible. The pea seeds in the shell have a high sugar content. This is also where the name of the vegetable comes from.

Origin

Sugar snap peas are grown in Germany and the Mediterranean region. Origins from Central Africa (e.g. Kenya) are available all year round.

Season

European snow peas are mostly imported goods and available fresh at about the same time as asparagus and strawberries. The season then ends after about 2-3 months.

Taste

Sugar snap peas have the typical taste of peas, but are much sweeter.

Use

Sugar snap peas can be eaten raw or cooked. You should be careful not to boil the pods, but only to steam them briefly or toss them in butter. That way they stay nice and crunchy. Sugar snap peas are a noble accompaniment to meat dishes, but they also give a fine aroma to salads. The legumes are also a popular ingredient for wok dishes and ragouts.

Storage/shelf life

Sugar snap peas will keep in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for up to three days. It is best to wrap them in a damp kitchen towel or keep them in a cling bag.
