Because bread with a high proportion of rye, wholemeal or coarse grains, like sourdough or rye-sourdough bread, has a particularly long shelf life. If you store the bread correctly, rye bread stays tasty for four to six days, wholemeal bread for seven to nine days. A simple wheat or mixed wheat bread, on the other hand, no longer tastes fresh after two days.

Storing bread – tips for an optimal environment

Because clay or earthenware absorb excess moisture with their open pores: they keep it away from the baked goods, but release it again if necessary. An optimal moisture exchange that prevents mold and keeps the bread fresh for a long time. With such a clay or earthenware vessel you can store bread without a bread box. A bread bin that is not airtight performs a similar function. With smaller quantities, the whole thing even works in the paper bag in which you bought the bread from the baker: paper also ensures good moisture management.
