Storing cucumbers – you should pay attention to this

There is often uncertainty as to whether various types of fruit or vegetables are in good hands in the refrigerator or whether another storage location may be better suited. If you have no way of storing healthy vegetables optimally, pickling cucumbers are a great alternative.

  • In general, it’s easy to remember: The sunnier the countries of origin of fruit and vegetables are, the less suitable the refrigerator is for storing the food. The cucumber originally comes from India, so the refrigerator is not really the best place to store it.
  • In addition, the cucumber consists of more than 90 percent water. If the temperature in the refrigerator is too cold, there is a risk that the cucumber will freeze. If the cucumber is thawed, the formerly crunchy vegetables are only mushy and hardly usable for the salad.
  • This is why watery vegetables such as tomatoes or cucumbers are not suitable for freezing. If you have harvested more cucumbers than you can use in the foreseeable future, there are a few other ways to preserve the cucumbers.
  • The optimal storage temperature for cucumbers is between 10 and 13 degrees. In addition, it is best for the cucumbers if they are stored in the dark. Suitable storage locations are, for example, a corresponding basement room or a pantry. Stored in this way, the cucumbers will keep for about two to three weeks.
  • If the cucumbers are wrapped in plastic, remove the plastic wrap. This will prevent mold from forming if moisture forms between the plastic and the cucumber.
  • Cucumbers and tomatoes go perfectly together in a salad, but this is by no means true when it comes to storage. All types of fruit and vegetables that produce ethylene, such as apples, pears, and tomatoes, should not be stored with cucumbers. Due to the gas that has escaped, the cucumbers overripe very quickly and are then no longer edible.
  • If the cucumbers taste bitter, they are not only inedible. The vegetables can even be toxic and harmful to your health. In extreme cases, consumption can even lead to death. If the vegetable tastes bitter, not only should you stop eating it, but the cucumber is also poisonous to your dog.
