Storing Nori Sheets: Here’s How to Store Them Properly

Nori sheets in the kitchen: you need them for this sushi

For nori sheets, red algae are first crushed, dried, and then roasted. During this process, the reddish color changes to the characteristic shade of green. The typical nori sheet is almost square. The sushi ingredients are put in there and the sheet is rolled. Among other things, nori sheets can be used for this sushi:

  • Maki: Filled with rice and one or more ingredients such as vegetables or fish.
  • Temaki: Here the sheet of nori is rolled up like a small school cone and then filled.
  • Onigiri: With these small rice dumplings, the nori sheet serves as a covering, base, or border.
  • Nigiri: Here the rice is formed into a long roll and topped with fish or omelet. Sometimes a strip of nori sheet is used here to give the topping a better grip.

Nori sheets need dryness

Since nori sheets are made by drying, it is important to protect them from moisture even during storage. Otherwise, they draw water, curl up and become unusable. It shouldn’t be too warm at the place of storage either. This accessory is best suited:

  • A large, well-closable box is ideal – there are particularly tight boxes with a rubber insert.
  • Freezer bag with zipper – the nori sheets fit in here as a whole and do not have to be bent or cut.
  • The original packaging of the nori sheets can also be used for further storage. The best way to do this is to cut the pack straight open. To close, use tape or wide locking clips.
  • Small silica gel bags for dehumidification are often included in the original packaging with the nori sheets. These bags can be saved and placed with the opened leaves during storage.
