Substitute Marjoram: These Alternatives Are Suitable for the Spice

If you don’t have marjoram at home, you can replace it with thyme or oregano. So don’t despair if you don’t have marjoram on hand. We’ll tell you why thyme and oregano are excellent substitutes.

Replace Marjoram – Which Is Why Thyme and Oregano Are the Perfect Alternative

If a recipe calls for marjoram, you can simply substitute thyme or oregano. We’ll tell you what to look out for.

  • Thyme: Thyme and marjoram are preferred in Mediterranean cuisine. The two herbs are closely related. They combine a tart aromatic taste.
  • Compared to marjoram, thyme has a slightly stronger taste. Dose the spice carefully if you use it instead of marjoram.
  • Tip: If you want to plant the herbs yourself , you can sow them next to each other without hesitation .
  • Oregano: Oregano also belongs to the family of Mediterranean herbs. It has a similar taste to marjoram and can therefore be used as a substitute without hesitation.
  • If you want to use oregano instead of marjoram, you can simply swap out the spice in a 1:1 ratio.
  • Caution: You should not use marjoram and oregano at the same time. The spices are so similar in taste and texture that they overlap in the development of their aroma. This softens the flavor intensity.

Marjoram Substitute – Mediterranean Herbs

In addition to thyme and oregano, there are other spices that belong to the Mediterranean herb family and are suitable substitutes for marjoram.

  • Mediterranean herbs also include: laurel, rosemary and sage. They deviate more from the taste of marjoram than thyme and oregano. Nevertheless, they are a good taste alternative.
  • If you use one of these herbs, the result will differ slightly in taste from the recipe. For this reason, taste your dish carefully.
