Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 6 fish fillets (matjes fillets)
  • 1 cup(s) sugar
  • ½ cup(s) vinegar (lemon vinegar)
  • 1 cup(s) water
  • 4 onions
  • 1 bunch of dill
  • 15 allspice, whole grains
  • 6 juniper berries

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Rest period approx. 1 day; Total time approx. 1 day 10 minutes

Slice the onions and bring to a boil along with all the ingredients except the herring. Let it simmer for a while. Then let it cool and pour over the sliced ​​herring fillets. Tip: If the broth is too hot, the fillets will become too soft. It tastes delicious with fried potatoes or on bread. It’s also great at parties or as a hangover breakfast.
