Tastes delicious on fresh plaited bread or bread, ideal for Sunday breakfast. Also recommended warm as a sauce for ice cream!
Finely chop the walnuts and toast them in a small pan over medium heat until the nuts smell good. Then add the butter and cream and warm through. Then stir in the maple syrup or pear syrup (known as Birnel in Switzerland) and season with salt. Add more syrup if you like it sweeter. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes. Don’t forget to stir! After 5-10 minutes, pour the mixture into a glass and let it cool. It will set by the time you put it in the fridge. The spread can also be served warm, e.g., as a sauce for ice cream. Tip: This recipe comes from the USA and is made there with maple syrup. I made the spread with pear syrup, which turned out excellently and tasted great. I think you could probably use other liquid, aromatic natural sugars, but so far I’ve only tried pear syrup and maple syrup.
