Turmeric has long been used as a medicinal plant in Southeast Asia. It is said that the tuber can cure various diseases, but some of them have not yet been scientifically proven:

  • Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and promotes digestion. If you season a meal with it, it becomes easier for the stomach to digest.
  • Turmeric is also said to help with ulcerative colitis. However, a pinch is not enough for this, but dragees or high-dose turmeric extract can provide relief.
  • Studies suggest that turmeric has anti-cancer properties.
  • Turmeric may also prevent Alzheimer’s: Goldenseal prevents a certain protein from being deposited in the brain. It is assumed that this contributes to the development of the disease.
  • Whether all of this is actually true has not yet been scientifically proven, but it cannot be ruled out either. Medicinally, turmeric has so far only been used for gastrointestinal complaints.
  • On the other hand, turmeric can have a negative effect on the body if you suffer from gallstones.

Use of Goldenseal

Turmeric has a spicy taste that is excellent for use in the kitchen. You can also find the root in pharmacies.

  • The substance that gives turmeric its bright yellow color is called curcumin. Among other things, mustard is colored with it.
  • Turmeric is often used as a spice in cooking. For example, you can use it in Indian curry, Thai curry, currywurst, or many other hearty or exotic dishes.
  • Highly concentrated turmeric in the form of capsules or dragees is available in pharmacies.
  • As a homeopathic home remedy, turmeric is also used as an extract to stimulate digestion or relieve stomach pinching after eating.
