Use Old Bread: How to Avoid Food Waste

Crispy yesterday, chewy today – and too dry tomorrow: Bread is one of those foods that can only be stored for a short time without loss of enjoyment. But you don’t have to gnaw through dry edges to avoid wasting anything. We show how you can use old bread.

Stale bread – too good to throw away

From single households to large families: leftover bread happens everywhere from time to time. Bought too many rolls for Sunday breakfast or spontaneously cooked something else instead of supper: Baked goods usually only stay fresh for a few days. Then you are faced with the question of how to use up the stale bread or recycle the old rolls. We have some tips for you to avoid food waste.

Easily process stale bread

Prevention comes before problem-solving. So that you don’t have to use up old bread so often, a few simple tips will help you to keep your favorite bread fresh for a long time. In addition, we will use our expert knowledge to reveal the answer to the question: “How do you get old bread fresh again?”

If you still find yourself with dry leftover bread, there are two easy ways to use up stale bread. As long as you have checked the baked goods thoroughly for mold beforehand, nothing stands in the way of further use:

Make breadcrumbs or breadcrumbs from it in a classic way. The easiest way to do this is with a food processor or a grater. So you always have a supply to hand for breading fish and meat or for sprinkling baking dishes.

Process the stale bread into croutons. To do this, cut it into cubes and roast it in a pan with a little fat and optional spices, herbs, or garlic. Then use it to garnish soups or salads.

Use old bread: Use recipes

Stale bread is not spoiled, it is just difficult to eat because of its hard consistency. As an ingredient in sweet or savory dishes, however, it softens again – and can still be used in cooking. Meatballs or bread dumplings are among the classic recipes that work wonderfully with stale bread and ensure that you no longer have to throw anything away. But our sweet bread pudding with almonds, sultanas and speculoos spice is also a suitable recipe for using up old bread. Regional specialties such as Kirschmichel or Ofenschlupfer work on a similar principle. “Armer Ritter” from the pan is also a popular recipe with stale bread, which you can prepare sweet or savory according to your taste. Bread salad and bread soup are also suitable for using up leftovers. Or you can use the leftovers to bake delicious bread chips to nibble on for cozy evening playing games or watching TV. In any case, rolls and the like are definitely too good to be thrown away – and with the right tips, luckily, that isn’t even necessary.
