Vegan Mustard: How to Tell if Mustard Is Vegan

Many products contain animal products and are therefore not vegan. Therefore, many vegans wonder if mustard contains animal products as well. In this article we will explain how you can tell whether the mustard you have bought is actually vegan or not.

How to tell if mustard is vegan

If you are wondering whether mustard is vegan, the question can be answered quite clearly.

  • Classic yellow and brown mustards that you can buy are basically vegan. Only ingredients of plant origin are used here.
  • However, always read the list of ingredients when buying. For example, if you buy a special product with a certain flavor, it may well contain ingredients of animal origin.
  • For example, the thickening agent xanthan gum is vegan. However, other thickeners can also be of animal origin.
  • However, if you buy a honey-mustard sauce, then it is not a purely vegan product. For example, if you are one of the vegans who see honey as an animal product, then the honey mustard sauce is not vegan for you.

Homemade mustard is vegan

If you want to be on the safe side, simply make your own mustard. This is done quickly and is in no way inferior to the bought mustard.

  1. Ingredients : 200 g of mustard seeds or mustard flour, 100 ml of water, 80 g of sugar, 275 ml of balsamic vinegar, 3 teaspoons of salt, a pinch of turmeric.
  2. Preparation : Grind the mustard seeds to a fine powder in a mortar and pestle . If you have mustard flour available, you can proceed with it right away.
  3. Heat the balsamic vinegar in a saucepan. Then take it off the stove and let it cool to room temperature.
  4. Mix all dry ingredients together. Add the liquid to the dry ingredients. Mix everything together. It is best to use a mixer and stir everything well with the mixer for five minutes.
  5. Tip : You can also use mustard as a remedy.
