Vegetarian diets have grown in popularity, especially over the past few years. It makes it possible not only to support the movement for the preservation of the environment and wildlife but also to please with outstanding results.

This article discusses 6 vegetarian diet options, including what foods to include and avoid in each of them. It also explores some common reasons why people choose a vegetarian diet.

Lacto-ovo vegetarian diet

Some people consider the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet to be the most traditional vegetarian diet. In this option, you will not eat meat or fish, but you will still include eggs and dairy products in your diet.

Some people choose this option for religious or cultural reasons. For example, people who follow Hinduism and Buddhism may follow a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet.

Lacto-vegetarian diet

The prefix “lacto” in the name indicates that this diet also includes the consumption of dairy products. If you decide to follow this diet, you should avoid beef, pork, chicken, fish, and eggs.

Vegetarian diet

The ovo-vegetarian diet does not include dairy products, but it does include eggs, as the prefix “ovo” suggests.

In addition to excluding meat and fish, the ovo-vegetarian diet excludes all dairy products and products made with them, such as cow’s milk, cheese, butter, sour cream, yogurt, and ice cream. However, you can still make eggs, omelets, and pastries because you can eat eggs.

Flexitarian diet

This vegetarian diet gives you more freedom than other strict diets. It emphasizes plant-based foods, allowing you to eat a small number of animal products.

You can also afford some meat products. Still, the main vitamins, proteins, and nutrients should be derived from whole plant foods.

The pescatarian diet

The pescatarian diet is a plant-based diet containing fish. The prefix comes from the Italian word “peace”, which means fish. Therefore, you can safely add tuna, halibut, salmon, or sushi to your diet. Fish and seafood saturate the body with omega-3 fatty acids.

In turn, meat dishes should be avoided. As for animal products, everything is individual. You can either eat eggs and dairy products or give them up.

Vegan diet

The vegan diet is the strictest. It excludes meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Some even refuse to eat honey because it is produced by bees.

Usually, this diet is chosen because of beliefs and ethics. It is based exclusively on plant-based foods: fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. This diet may also include plant-based alternatives to traditional animal products: milk and plant-based dairy products, egg, and meat substitutes.
