Wasabi Has That Much Scoville

Wasabi: That’s how much Scoville it has

Although wasabi can be as hot as some chilies, it still cannot be classified on the Scoville scale, only compared to the hotness of chilies. Find out why below.

  • Wasabi is not on the Scoville scale. The reason for this is that the spiciness of wasabi is caused by other substances like chilies. While the substance capsaicin is responsible here, different oils take over this task with wasabi.
  • Wasabi cannot be assigned a Scoville number because Scoville is measured by how much water is needed to neutralize the effects of capsaicin. Since the substance is not contained in wasabi, it cannot be measured.
  • Nevertheless, wasabi can be classified subjectively, even if the spiciness can vary depending on the production and ingredients. Many say they rank wasabi slightly above jalapenos, which have around 8,000 Scoville.
  • Wasabi is mostly used in paste form and has a taste similar to mustard and horseradish. It serves as a side dish, especially with sushi, but also with meat and fish dishes.
