Water In The Fridge: How to Keep Condensation At Bay In Your Appliance

Water in the fridge is normal in moderation. But if you have more water inside your device than a damp film on the back wall, something is wrong. We explain how to find the cause if water in the refrigerator does not drain, how to remedy the situation, and prevent new build-up.

Water in the fridge: reasons & remedy

There’s water in your fridge and you’re wondering where it’s coming from and what you can do about it? As a rule, a certain formation of water in the refrigerator is normal. This is condensation water that is normally drained through the small drainage channel at the back of your unit. From there it runs into a collection container at the back, where the compressor is also located. This ensures that it gets cold in your fridge. The condenser generates heat, which allows the water in the collection container to evaporate. This circuit is specially designed by the manufacturers of the refrigerators and usually works so well that only a damp film or small droplets should form on the back wall of your refrigerator. If, on the other hand, water forms in the refrigerator, collects under the vegetable compartment, and does not drain, then this can have various causes.

What can you do about the water in the fridge?

If you have water in the refrigerator, first check the drainage channel. This may have become clogged. Especially the small hole in the middle, through which the water flows towards the collection container, sometimes gets clogged. Clean gently with a thin pipe cleaner or fine bottle brush. Be careful not to push the dirt deeper into the hole, but carefully pull it out. Check the drain channel regularly, then your refrigerator should no longer get excessively wet. If your refrigerator is wet even though the drain is clear, an old door seal could be the reason for increased condensation. If the refrigerator does not close completely tightly, heat gets in, which leads to water inside. You can easily replace a porous door seal yourself, you do not need to contact customer service for this.

Avoid water in the fridge with these tricks

Two common habits can also lead to too much outside heat getting into the fridge and water forming inside the fridge. If you leave the door open for too long when putting food in or taking it out, there will inevitably be more condensation than can drain off the drain channel. The same happens when you put hot food in the fridge. So pay more attention to this and make the rest of the family aware not to leave the refrigerator door open unnecessarily long. And let food cool down completely before putting it in the fridge.
