Water With Lemon on an Empty Stomach: Who Absolutely Cannot Drink a Trendy Drink

It is important to prepare lemon water properly and drink it through a straw, as lemon juice can have a negative effect on tooth enamel.

Water with lemon on an empty stomach is a fashionable morning ritual for all those who keep fit and healthy. But it is not really useful for everyone. Weight loss expert Pavel Isanbayev told us who shouldn’t drink lemon water on an empty stomach.

First of all, it is important to prepare such water properly and not to overdo it with lemon. The optimal concentration of lemon juice in water is from a few drops to a tablespoon per 250 milliliters.

“If there is more lemon juice, the water will negatively affect tooth enamel. The acid destroys it, so the recommendation to drink water with lemon through a straw makes sense,” Isanbayev said.

The expert added that people with gastrointestinal problems should avoid lemon water. The fact is that lemon juice prevents erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal mucosa from growing. In addition, it exacerbates the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease: stomach contents are thrown into the esophagus, sour belching, nausea, and heartburn.

People with an excess of iron in the body should not abuse water with lemon, as vitamin C contained in lemon enhances iron absorption. In large quantities, the trace element is toxic and can damage the liver if accumulated.

“There are reports from people with migraines that lemon, like citrus fruits in general, can provoke a headache attack. However, there is no scientific evidence for this information. No serious studies have been conducted on the health effects of lemon water. All statements about the benefits or harm of this drink are based solely on the personal experience of individuals,” the expert summarized.
