What Actually Is Analogue Cheese?

So-called analogue cheese is not real cheese. The latter is made exclusively from milk, while analog cheeses also use other ingredients such as vegetable fats, vegetable proteins, starch, and certain additives. These include, for example, flavor enhancers, colorings, aromas, and emulsifiers. Milk powder is also added to some analogue cheeses.

The product looks and tastes similar to real cheese and has similar properties. However, it is cheaper to produce than real cheese because the artificial product does not need to mature. In addition, heat resistance and melting behavior are usually better than real cheese.

The product is often used to make ready meals such as pizza or lasagne, as well as bakery snacks such as cheese sticks and gratinated rolls. However, strictly speaking, according to European and German law, it may not be called cheese. Word combinations that indicate cheese are also prohibited, including the term “analogue cheese”. Instead, only the components of the substitute product are noted on the list of ingredients. However, it can happen that real cheese and artificial products are mixed. In this case, the real cheese is of course on the list of ingredients – whether analog cheese was also used can only be seen from the additives that are also specified.

The artificial imitation cheese is not harmful to health, it can only be heavy in the stomach after consumption. In return, it is possible that the counterfeit product can be eaten by people with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance, provided no milk powder has been used. As a rule, the analog cheese cannot come up with valuable calcium from milk. It is important to you, it is better to bake quick bites yourself!
