What Goes Well With Pumpkin Soup: Side Dishes, Meat And Bread

The pumpkin harvest begins at the end of August and by October at the latest it will be time for the first warm soup. But what goes well with pumpkin soup? We’ll enlighten you.

What you should know!

The pumpkin soup is an all-rounder. You can give them an Asian touch with a little ginger or enjoy them very simply and without much frills. Incidentally, the pure pumpkin does not need much for its flavor to come into its own: a little salt, butter, an onion, heat, and a little water for pouring are enough to cook a really good soup from the vegetables. The famous autumn dish can be refined with natural flavor enhancers such as pumpkin oil, coconut milk, sour cream, whipped cream, balsamic vinegar, or white wine. Side dishes and deposits can also spice up the soup. Before we enlighten you further, here is some important information: There are different types of pumpkin and they differ in taste. The two best-known pumpkins and usually available in the supermarket are probably:

  • Hokkaido
  • Butternut squash

The taste of Hokkaido does not fundamentally differ from butternut squash, but it is slightly sweeter and more aromatic. In principle, you can use both squashes for all sorts of variations, but the butternut squash is good for “simple” soups. With Hokkaido, you can dare to try more exotic recipe ideas.

What goes with pumpkin soup?

There are many ways to upgrade your pumpkin soup. Depending on the type of pumpkin soup, the perfect side dish varies. We’ll show you some supplements and when to use them best.

Bread

It doesn’t always have to be fancy to be good. Nothing goes better with ordinary pumpkin soup than sourdough farmhouse bread. This is excellent for dipping into a good soup or roasting. By the way, we recommend farmhouse bread with the butternut squash. You can also use white bread for the Hokkaido.

Meat

Do you like your soup with meat? That is of course also possible. With the butternut squash, we recommend a sausage filling with wieners. The Hokkaido goes well with bacon. Serrano ham and toasted garlic bread are also great side dishes for pumpkin soup. Meatballs go well with both types of squash, also in combination with ginger. Chorizo tastes particularly delicious with Hokkaido.

Tip: Prunes wrapped in bacon are also a delicious side dish for your Hokkaido soup.

Fish

Shellfish are particularly suitable as an accompaniment to pumpkin soup. No fish tastes as good as scallops with Hokkaido. You can also garnish them with seaweed if you have visitors. Otherwise, prawns, crabs, and smoked salmon always work. Curry, ginger, and coconut milk go well with all types of fish.

Other top side dishes:

In addition to meat, fish, and bread, many other side dishes go well with pumpkin soup. Peanuts, parsley, and potato chips have proven particularly effective. They are also popular with some star chefs. We love the unusual version with mango. In combination with ginger, coconut milk, and chili flakes we give the fruity mango pumpkin soup the right kick.
By the way, you can add diced potatoes to the “simple” butternut squash soup – garnished with chives, it tastes super delicious.
