What is a Tart?

A tart is a French cake made from shortcrust pastry and baked in a round, flat pan, usually with a ridged edge. Tarte dough is traditionally made without salt or sugar – and therefore tastes neutral. A tart can therefore be prepared sweet or savory and is therefore particularly enjoyable as a pastry. A tart is often sweet.

Bake a tart – and enjoy it from savory to sweet

The original recipe for the tart comes from France, the land of masterful baking and diverse cuisine. The great thing about this pastry is above all its culinary versatility. You can bake a delicious tart with hearty ingredients – for example with vegetables, ham, or meat. Or you can prepare them as a sweet version, like in our recipes for a juicy apple tart or a sophisticated lemon tart. This also gives you the choice of serving the pastry as a main course or, for example, as a dessert.

A classic sweet version is the Tarte Tatin, which is often served as a dessert in France. This delicious apple tart is baked “upside down” so that the apples are covered with a delicate layer of caramel. A classic tart pan made of coated metal or ceramic is suitable as a baking pan, sometimes also a fireproof pan. After caramelizing on the stove, first, the apples and then the dough are added to the mold – and then baked in the oven. After cooling, the Tarte Tatin is turned out and ready to enjoy. You can also prepare a sweet Tarte Tatin with pears or apricots. Even puff pastry is used in various Tarte Tatin recipes.

But what is the difference between a quiche and a tart?

The quiche is also a French shortcrust pastry, whose name comes from the Franconian, which is baked in a round, flat shape. A key difference between quiche and tart is that a quiche is usually savory. A tart, on the other hand, can usually be prepared sweet. They are also available with a topping, which is not the case with a quiche. Another difference is the filling of eggs and sour cream or milk, which is characteristic of the filling of a quiche. A well-known example is the spicy quiche Lorraine with bacon and leeks. Enough theory? Our varied tart recipes provide you with great baking ideas to try out.
