Fish is healthy – is that right?
The most popular types of fish in Germany are tuna, salmon, and eel.
- In itself, fish is healthy. Almost every variety has so many important ingredients for humans that it doesn’t matter which fish you eat. Above all, protein, vitamin B1 and B12, but also vitamin D are contained in large quantities in fish. There are also omega-3 fatty acids, which also have positive effects on your body.
- Fatty acids are particularly important for your cardiovascular system, and they also prevent inflammation. Proteins build your muscles, and fish protein is easier to digest than animal protein. Vegetable proteins are even healthier.
- Vitamin D is important for bone formation and strengthening the immune system. The types of fish with the highest vitamin D content include salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Tuna is also high in vitamin D.
- Fish also has an important influence on the proper functioning of your thyroid gland. This requires iodine above all, otherwise, it will not work properly. With just 200 to 400 grams of fish every week you cover a quarter of your iodine requirement, no other natural food contains more iodine.
- Quality is the key to healthy fish. Make sure the fish looks fresh and, most importantly, the packaging is undamaged. There is no difference between frozen fish and fresh fish. If you can’t find fresh fish, you can eat canned or frozen fish without hesitation. The ingredients have not been lost during processing.
- However, there is also a disadvantage: Due to the pollution of the seas, many fish are contaminated with toxins. These are mainly lead PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls), and mercury. The toxins are present in different amounts in different types of fish. In particular, shark, eel, butter mackerel, loach, halibut, pike, swordfish, monkfish, and tuna are usually more heavily contaminated.
- Legal regulations specify maximum values for the heavy metal content in fish for the entire EU. A health hazard is therefore not to be expected. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to use fish species that are normally less contaminated.
