Caffeine During Pregnancy – You Have to Consider That

Pregnancy can be very unsettling for the mother-to-be. It is well known that smoking and alcohol are now taboo. Very few people know how caffeine works during pregnancy.

Caffeine during pregnancy: the dose makes the poison

Caffeine is not forbidden during pregnancy and as a mother-to-be, you don’t have to do without coffee in the morning or cola in between. However, there are a few things to consider.

  • The WHO recommends no more than 300 milligrams of caffeine. A can of cola has about 40 milligrams of caffeine, and a cup of filter coffee has 140 milligrams.
  • The German Society for Nutrition recommends pregnant women not drink more than three cups of coffee per day. Other countries even recommend just two cups.
  • Incidentally, some types of tea and chocolate also contain caffeine and the caffeine content of different types of coffee differs in some cases. Be careful when consuming.

Caffeine has these consequences for your baby

The big problem with caffeine is that it can get into the baby’s blood. While adults have enzymes that break down caffeine, the unborn child does not have them.

  • It has not yet been confirmed that high coffee consumption can cause miscarriages, but caffeine has an influence on the weight of the child.
  • The Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study revealed that children born to pregnant women who consumed high amounts of caffeine were often very thin and did not always reach the average weight of infants.
  • In childhood and adulthood, low birth weight often leads to a weaker immune system and more health problems.
