Tomato sauce like from the GDR school kitchen

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 125 g butter
  • 1 large onion(s), finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • ½ bottle of ketchup
  • salt and pepper
  • Sugar

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 20 minutes

Melt the butter in a saucepan and heat, fry the onion. Add the tomato paste and flour and sauté, stirring constantly. Add enough water to achieve a creamy consistency. Add the ketchup and bring to a boil briefly, stirring constantly. Season with a little salt and pepper, and a pinch of sugar if desired. Please do not experiment with other spices. If you like, you can also add finely diced sausage to the sauce. If you loved this sauce at school, you’ll love it all over again.
