Spread the love

Ingredients for 8 servings:

  • 1 kg gyros meat, lean
  • 2 small onions, chopped
  • 2 large bell peppers or mushrooms
  • 60 ml Metaxa
  • 2 cups of cream
  • 500 ml meat broth
  • 200 g cheese, grated
  • ½ tube(s) tomato paste

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest time approx. 1 hour; Cooking/baking time approx. 15 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour 45 minutes

with peppers or mushrooms as desired

Place the gyros, onions, and 20 ml of Metaxa in a bowl and let it simmer for about 1 hour. Then brown everything in a pan. Slice the bell peppers and brown them briefly. Place everything in a casserole dish. Bring 500 ml of water and meat broth to a boil and pour over the meat. Stir in the tomato paste, add the cream, and the remaining 40 ml of Metaxa, and bring everything to a boil briefly. Sprinkle the cheese on top and place in the oven at about 180°C. When the cheese has a nice crispy color, it’s ready. You can serve it with anything, such as pasta, rice, or even croquettes. If you don’t like so much sauce, simply use a little less cream and broth.
