how my grandma made it

Form the ingredients into a firm yeast dough and let it rise. Form the dough into two long, thin logs and let it rise again. Bake at moderate heat until light brown. After 1-2 days, cut into 1 cm thick slices and bake slowly on an ungreased baking sheet at low heat, turning frequently, until golden brown. If desired, the slices can be rolled in vanilla sugar during baking. The rusk also tastes delicious when chopped almonds are added to the dough.
