Mike's US Onion Sauce for steaks and ground meat

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 500 g onion(s), thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 60 ml sherry vinegar
  • 240 ml red wine, semi-dry
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 1 hour; Cooking/baking time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour 30 minutes

for all those who want a real portion (a lot) of sauce at the BBQ

Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan. Add the salted and peppered onions and fry until golden brown. Add the brown sugar, reduce the heat, and continue to fry, uncovered, for 15 minutes, until the onions have softened and are slightly browned. Now add the sherry vinegar and red wine and continue to simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has thickened. The sauce can be served hot or cold. The flavor will be enhanced if made a day in advance.
