The Alaska Pollock has nothing to do with the salmon. It belongs to the cod family and is related to the cod. Alaska Pollock are elongated, olive green to brown in color that turns slightly silver on the sides, and have distinctive barbels on their heads. The Alaska Pollock is 30 cm to 80 cm long and up to 15 years old. We find the Alaska pollock fillet in our beloved fish sticks. Alaska pollock is the most eaten fish in Germany.
Origin
The Alaska pollock lives in the North Pacific. It can be found near the bottom at depths of 30 to 400 m. The main fishing nations are the USA and Russia.
Season
Available all year round. When buying, you should always pay attention to the MSC seal. This signals to the consumer that it is a product from guaranteed environmentally friendly managed fisheries.
Taste
Alaska Pollock has a distinct, savory flavor. The white to delicate pink flesh is tender and juicy.
Use
Whether steamed, boiled or grilled – Alaska Pollock tastes delicious in any form. The fish fillet is ideal for fish skewers, goulash, fish sticks and is often used as the basis for meatballs.
Storage
You can keep the fish fillet in the fridge for a day or two.
Nutritional value/active ingredients
Alaska Pollock is low in fat (only 0.8 percent) and high in protein, plus it provides us with plenty of valuable iodine (important for the thyroid). The aromatic fish contains vitamins from the B group: primarily niacin and riboflavin (B2). The minerals potassium and phosphorus are also present.
