How and where is the best place to store apples? Unfortunately, they quickly attract fruit flies in the fruit basket.
Apples should be stored cool and dark at around 7°C in the fruit/vegetable compartment of the refrigerator or in a suitable cellar. If there is no cellar, the apples can also be stored in a cool and dark pantry in PET bags with air holes. This bag keeps the humidity in the air and prevents the apples from drying out.
Apples with bruises, cracks in the skin or other damage should not be stored for a long time, but consumed or processed quickly. These spots can rot quickly and in turn attract fruit flies.
Many apple varieties such as Berlepsch, Boskoop, Braeburn, Cox Orange, Elstar, Gala, Gloster, Golden Delicious, Jonagold and Idared can be stored for several months. Other varieties such as Alkmene, Gravensteiner, James Grieve, Klarapfel, on the other hand, do not store well and should be eaten or processed quickly.
