This is what America tastes like
Bring the beans to a boil in a pot of water, cover, and simmer for about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let stand for 1 hour. Drain. Sauté the onions and peppers in the oil until translucent, then stir in the beans and transfer everything to an ovenproof casserole dish. Mix together the water, whiskey, maple syrup, sugar, and mustard and pour over the beans. Spread the bacon over the beans and place the dish in the oven. Cook at 160°C (320°F) for 2 hours. Then reduce the heat to 140°C (284°F) and cook for another 2 hours. Stir well after each hour and then spread the bacon back on top. Finally, remove the bacon or crumble it into small pieces and mix it with the vegetables. Season with salt, pepper, and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serve with steaks, meatballs, or simply with potatoes.
