Cooking coffee by hand provides great filter coffee enjoyment. Although this is more time-consuming than with a conventional coffee machine, it is all the more worthwhile. Because only with the right preparation does the coffee unfold its full aroma.

You need this to make filter coffee

The most common way of making coffee is still with the coffee maker. Whether with pads or filters – in just a few minutes you have a cup of freshly brewed coffee in front of you. However, you get a completely different coffee enjoyment when preparing it by hand and filter.

  • To brew filter coffee, all you need is a hand filter, filter paper, and the right coffee. Matching hand filters like in grandma’s time are still made by the Melitta brand, for example.
  • Buy whole coffee beans that you grind freshly before preparing the coffee. This is the only way to get the full coffee aroma.
  • You can grind the coffee to different degrees of fineness. The finer the powder, the less time you need to filter the coffee.
  • An electric coffee grinder does the grinding for you. Alternatively, grind the coffee with a hand grinder.
  • Brew the coffee with water that is about 90 degrees hot. If the water is too hot, aromatic substances are destroyed and the coffee then tastes too bitter. Water that is too cold, on the other hand, makes the coffee taste sour.

Always rinse the coffee pot and filter before preparation

To brew the perfect filter coffee, you should first rinse the pot and filter with hot water. In this way, no taste of the paper filter gets into your coffee.

  • Place the filter jug ​​on top of the coffee jug. Place a paper filter in the filter jug. Then pour some water into the filter and let the water run through. This flushes the paper filter and loses its taste.
  • Pour the drained water out of the jug.
  • It is best to set the boiling water aside for a minute so that it cools down to around 90 degrees.
  • You need about 30 grams of freshly ground coffee for 500 ml of water.
  • Place the ground coffee beans in the paper filter. Then pour water on the powder until it is completely covered with water.
  • Gradually pour more and more water onto the coffee so that it becomes soaked with water. Bubbles should form.
  • After about five minutes, the water should have drained completely.
  • It is best to use the coffee grounds as fertilizer afterward. Your indoor plants will thank you.
