Buttermilk: Lactose-Free or Not? Easily Explained

If you suffer from lactose intolerance, you are probably wondering whether buttermilk is lactose-free. The question is easy to answer. We explain the most important thing to you in this article.

Buttermilk: Is the milk product lactose-free?

Buttermilk is not a lactose-free product. It is made from milk and divided into cream and skimmed milk by a separation process.

  • Buttermilk is not lactose-free. Like milk, it contains lactose. However, the proportion is somewhat lower in buttermilk.
  • After the separation process, nutrients that do not end up in the butter remain in the buttermilk. This is why buttermilk has fewer calories than butter. It contains saturated fat, sugar, protein and salt and is therefore no less healthy than other dairy products.
  • Lactose-free buttermilk cannot be bought in Germany.
  • If you would like to replace milk or buttermilk with a lactose-free alternative, use almond , oat or soy milk.
