a recipe from my grandmother in Austria

Cook the pasta in salted water, then drain and reserve some of the pasta water. While the pasta is cooking, grate the cheese. Finely chop the onions and fry them in the margarine until golden brown. Then add layers of pasta and cheese to a baking dish and season each layer with pepper. Spread the onions and fat on the last layer and pour a little (but not too much) of the hot pasta water over it. Place the lid on the baking dish and let the pasta sit for 2-3 minutes. Then stir everything well and serve.
