in memory of Grandma Alma

Fry the diced onions in a large, wide pan in plenty of oil. They should be brown, but definitely not too dark. Then add the minced meat, which is then chopped and crumbled in the pan. Continue frying with the onions. Do not increase the heat to too high. After a while, the fat and juices will render, so continue simmering, stirring occasionally. Season and simmer for a while longer. During this time, dice the potatoes and add the potato sticks. Pour in a cup of hot water and cover. After about 10 minutes, add the diced cucumber and continue simmering until the potatoes are tender. This will take about another 15 minutes. Season again to taste – and you’re done.
